How to Eliminate Expenses by Living Frugally

I love writing for my blog at a local coffee shop we have! I have made friends with some of the regulars, and I can attest to the general question many bloggers get asked: do you really make money from doing that? When I tell them what I blog about and that you can make a small amount of money doing it, I am usually asked if I have some secret way to save money!

Not Sure There Is A Secret!

Well, I have never really come up with a secret other than hard work and thriftiness. But as I was sitting here, I overheard two ladies talking about how they were going through some rough times. They wanted to figure out ways to save money (how cool is that, well the saving money part) and one of their thoughts was to make their own laundry detergent.

While I have never made my own laundry detergent, never plan to either, it started me thinking about one thing you guys could do to save money.

And Here It Is!

Going with the theme of something as simple as homemade laundry detergent, I picked something along those lines! For as long as I can remember, my wife probably found it off Pinterest-let’s be honest everything is found there, we have saved hundreds of $$ by making our laundry softener last us months!

While this might not be something that allows you to pay off the credit card or take a vacation, all the little things can add up. And eventually, you’re thriftiness can help those dreams happen!

Here Is How We Do It

We bought a Tupperware container that has a lid (so that it won’t spill) and is big enough to handle one full bottle of the softener.

Next, purchase either a handful of large sponges that can be cut, or buy some smaller prepackaged sponges. You can generally find these on sale at the store or online! Make sure they don’t have the scratchy stuff on them and are just plain clean sponges.

About three times a year, we buy the fabric softener of our choice from Meijer. We make sure it is a scent that we love since our clothes will be that scent for probably four months or so!

When you get back to your house, pour a 1:1 cup ratio into that container. If you want to make it last even longer, add like a 1:1.5 cup ratio instead!

Now put the sponges in the solution and let them sit for awhile. This way they will soak up all that smelly goodness from the softener!

When you wash your clothes, don’t stick the softener in like you might normally do. Instead, when you are ready to dry them, throw one sponge (two if it’s a big load) into the dryer- make sure to wring them out slightly!

And there you have it! Your clothes will come out smelling amazing, and you can put the sponge back into the solution to use again next time!

How To Stop Spending Money On Things You Don’t Need

I Discovered My Answer

So when people ask me now what my secret is to saving money, I will probably give this as my answer.

While this won’t make you rich, it sure will help save money by extending the life of your softener. I have never made homemade laundry detergent before, but simply making your laundry softener last longer sounds a whole lot easier than making detergent!

  1. We don’t spend any money on entertainment (Except for wifi). We don’t have cable and we are mooching off of our family for Netflix. We read a lot more now and can still watch some shows on Netflix and get all the entertainment we need.

    1. Yep, it’s all about perspective as well! We don’t always need to spend money on things for them to be fun!
